Watch Your Step
When you’re hiking, you cannot walk aimlessly. At least most of the hikes you do will require attention. No scrolling on your phone or letting your mind wander off on you. Hikes require your attention.
I was reminded of this seemingly “duh” thought while hiking in the Canadian Rockies. Nothing like trying to be observant in the dense forest only to find yourself tripping because you didn’t clear the tree root enough. Like watching for bears isn’t hard enough. Apparently tree roots are just as dangerous!
Thankfully I didn’t end up in the mud, but my water bottle did (sad day). I thought that much is the same for our spiritual lives. Our spiritual life requires us to pay attention, much like our physical lives. Just like we have to watch with our eyes while hiking so that we don’t trip or roll an ankle, we must be both mindful and aware that the enemy can and will throw obstacles in our way to take us out.
It doesn’t take much for the enemy to push us off course and distract us from God’s goodness in our lives. Our ability to get distracted by social media, the news, or the latest gossip over time, will build a bigger and bigger wedge between us and our desire to spend time with God. It’s so easy to say “After this show I’ll do my quiet time” or “One quick look at Amazon.” Before you know it, way too much time has passed and you haven’t opened your Bible. The enemy plays a mean game when it comes to distraction. We are all at risk.
If you’ve grown up in church, I’m sure you’re well aware of the importance of putting on the armor of God in order to stand firm and strong against the enemy’s pull. If we want to be clothed with the strength to stand firm in a world that does not want us to, we must be rooted in the Word of God. The one true instructional book that has withstood the ultimate test of time and circumstance. Offering hope and the godly wisdom we need to persevere as believers.
We truly must watch our step in life. We must be mindful of the spiritual battle that is ongoing, most of the time, behind the scenes. We must stand firm as believers and carry the love of Jesus wherever we go. The world is watching. What kind of life are you leading?
Colossians 2:6-9, NLT
And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.
Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.
