There Are Still Kind People Out There
It is refreshing that there are still kind people out in the world. The good outweighs the bad. A reminder that we should focus on the good things and people in the world instead of being so overcome by all the negatives.
I had ordered a package online. Nothing major, but a couple small items I wanted to have on hand for the moment we received a call to open our home to a foster child or children. You can’t completely plan or have all the necessities on hand as if you were expecting, but I knew I wanted to have a few special items in my home for when the time came.
Unfortunately, my package didn’t arrive. I checked the tracking link because it said it was delivered. I eagerly checked all the places it could’ve been left in my home aside from the mailbox. The package was nowhere to be found. I waited a couple of days just in case, but it still didn’t show up.
I know things happen. Packages get lost every day. I’ll admit I was bummed. I wasn’t so much about getting my refund, but the principal behind what I had ordered. I was trying to build a home that would be a safe place for little ones to land for however long God intended.
The undelivered and misplaced package was a reminder to me that it’s not about stuff. It’s not about having the best items or multitude of toys. It’s about the amount of love and encouragement that we can provide for a child or children. It’s about providing home in a family to a child who needs one.
Much to my surprise, though days had passed, my doorbell rang. I know this sounds crazy, but I’ve read enough stories that I just about didn’t go answer the door. But I went, and there stood an older man holding my package. He didn’t live around me, but took the time out of his day, to likely go out of his way, to hand-deliver my package. I just about cried at his generosity.
There are still kind people in the world. The mishap and delivery wasn’t his fault. The man didn’t know me or what I had ordered or for what reason I had ordered the blanket. But he did the right thing. He chose to extend kindness. I was blown away.
The whole situation not only meant a lot to me, the man’s generosity challenged me to extend kindness in all situations. You may never know how a single act of kindness can impact someone. The joy you can bring. One small act of kindness can encourage someone else to share kindness with the next person thus positively impacting so many. I pray that I can be a person who does things because it’s the kind, right thing to do, not because I’m going to get accolades. Kindness can and will change people. I’m glad to have my blanket but today I’m more thankful for kind people.
Galatians 6:4-9
Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct.
Those who are taught the word of God should provide for their teachers, sharing all good things with them.
Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
